What are the symptoms of migraine?

The two most common types of migraine headache are classic and common. The classic migraine begins with a prodrome stage characterized by feelings of lethargy or irritability 24 hours before the second stage of visual sensations of flashing, dots or tunnel vision (referred to as an aura) 10 to 30 minutes prior to headache onset. Other preceding symptoms may include speech problems, weak arm or leg sensations, confusion, and tingling in the face or hands. Classic migraine headaches last one to two days and cause severe pain, usually on one side, and may be accompanied by nausea and vomiting.

Common migraine headaches are not preceded by an aura but may be associated with prodromal symptoms of tiredness, fluid retention, or mood alteration. Common migraines, which can last three to four days, are often associated with nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or frequent urination. Common migraine headaches also generally start on one side of the brain, but may spread. Both types can occur infrequently (less than once a year) or as often as several times a week. Other types of migraine headache occur less commonly.
